Flow Research Expands, Opens Ten New Websites

Flow Research is in expansion mode; in fact, we are growing much faster than any of the markets we are studying.  As part of this expansion, we are bringing ten new websites online.  These ten new sites will serve as the focus for market study and technical information relating to the variable or subject of these sites.

While our name is Flow Research, we in fact study not only flow, but also all variables related to flow.  In particular, besides flow, we study temperature, pressure, and level.  Because of the ever-increasing amount of information on www.flowresearch.com, we are opening up sites specific to other variables besides flow.  Information relating to those variables will then be stored on those sites.  Separate divisions of Flow Research are being created, corresponding to these sites.

Flow Research is bringing the following sites online:

Flow Research has begun research on the worldwide pressure market.  We will be issuing two reports on pressure sometime later this year:

·        Worldwide Pressure Transmitter Market

·        Worldwide Pressure Transducer Market

Pressure Research. If you visit the www.pressureresearch.com site, you can find updated information on these pressure studies.  Michael Kirsch, Senior Analyst, is currently researching these markets.  We are especially interested in finding out about applications for multivariable pressure transmitters.  You can send email to Pressure Research at info@pressureresearch.com.

Temperature Research. In 2000, Flow Research, together with Ducker Worldwide, issued two temperature studies: The Market for Temperature Sensors and Transmitters in the Americas and The Market for Infrared Thermometers and Thermal Imagers Worldwide.  The temperature site, www.temperatureresearch.com, will become the new center for information on these studies, and on temperature products.  Those of you in the temperature market will soon have your own Temperature Research website.  You can send email to Temperature Research at info@temperatureresearch.com.

Idea Network is back!  Those of you who were in the instrumentation business in the early to mid-90s may remember Idea Network of Reading and North Reading, Massachusetts.  Idea Network was established in 1986 as technical writing company.  In 1990, it became a market research company.  Besides doing studies on flowmeters, barcode equipment, nondestructive test equipment, distributed control systems, and many other topics, Idea Network published several newsletters.  These include Innovative Ideas and Process Industry Monitor.

Idea Network is back, as the marketing and publishing division of Flow Research.  The website of Idea Network is www.ideanetworks.net.  See below for the first publication available on this site.  You can send email to Idea Network at info@ideanetwork.net.

Jesse Yoder Keynotes Flowday 2001

Flowday is an annual flowmeter conference held in the United Kingdom, which has been sponsored by Flowline.  This year was the fifth year of the conference, which was held about two hours north of London.  Jesse Yoder, president of Flow Research, was the keynote speaker. In his talk, Dr. Yoder compared the market size and growth of ultrasonic, Coriolis, magnetic, and vortex flowmeters.  The talk was entitled “The World Market for New Technology Flowmeters: Market Analysis and Growth.”  Flowday 2001 was held on June 14, 2001.

About 100 devotees of flow attended the conference.  Other speakers included David Gerrard, Conference organizer, Andy Godley (WRc), Professor Ted Higham (Sussex University), and Gregor Brown (NEL).  A number of other speakers gave presentations on various aspects of flow.  Look forward to an expanded Flowday in 2002.

International Measurement Association (IMA) Being Formed

Flow Research is spearheading the formation of a new international association devoted to measurement.  It is called the International Measurement Association (IMA).  Here are some of the proposed functions of IMA:

·        To establish a website that is a center for knowledge about flow and measurement

·        To create a mechanism for communication among members about matters relating to flow and measurement

·        To serve as a resource for end-users who have application questions about measurement

·        To fund educational projects related to flow and measurement

·        To document the history of measurement

·        To publish informational materials, including newsletters and eventually journals, relating to flow and measurement

·        To facilitate research into flow and measurement, and into new ways to measure flow

·        To promulgate measurement standards where they are needed and do not currently exist

·        To sponsor conferences on flow and measurement

·        To serve as a liaison between universities and industry on measurement-related issues

While this organization will initially be chartered in the United States, we are seeking to make it a truly international association, rather than a US-centric organization that claims to be worldwide.  We are currently seeking Founding/Organizing Members.  So far, we have Founding Members from the United Kingdom, Spain, India, Pakistan, and the United States.

To find out more about this exciting new non-profit organization, please visit its current website, which is www.flowresearch.org.  This website contains a complete proposal that explains the purposes of the group, talks about funding, etc.  If you would like to become involved in building this group, please send an email to info@flowresearch.org.

The IMA will concern itself with flow, but it will also address matter related to other variables such as pressure, temperature, and level.  If anything, the instrumentation community is too segmented into narrow channels.  Like a stream with many small rivulets and streamlets, it is composed of thousands and thousands of engineers, consultants, marketing managers, etc. who are working without knowledge of what others in the next room or the next town are doing.  The IMA seeks to find ways to link people involved in measurement together so they can share knowledge and resources.  Just as rivulets and streamlets when they flow together can make a mighty river, so the IMA will create a powerful force for measurement by linking together the diverse members of the measurement community.

New Online Book Provides Manual for Life

Wakefield, Massachusetts, July 20, 2001 – Flow Research announces the release of a new online book on philosophy and language by Jesse Yoder.  The book is entitled Shades of Experience.  Shades of Experience shows how people can increase their understanding by becoming more aware of previously unnoticed differences in their experience.  The book, subtitled “A Manual for Life,” is available online at www.ideanetworks.net, where it can be downloaded on a chapter-by-chapter basis.  There is no charge for reading this book.

Idea Network previously published Shades of Experiences in 1988 under the title Duonyms.  Duonyms contains a dictionary of duonyms, along with an explanation of how they are formed.  A duonym is a word formed by putting two existing words together to form a single word with two components.  Examples of duonyms include ‘egghead,’ ‘flowmeter,’ ‘girlfriend,’ and ‘homepage.’  Many website addresses are duonyms, since the Internet does not allow spaces to appear in addresses.

Chapter Two of Shades of Experience explains the philosophy of viewpoint pluralism.  According to viewpoint pluralism, our knowledge of a subject or object increases as we take additional viewpoints of it.  For example, someone who sees a house from the inside and from all four sides has more knowledge of it than someone who just drives by it.  This chapter also includes practical suggestions for applying viewpoint pluralism.  Examples include taking a new way to work and trying out new restaurants.

Chapter Seven of Shades of Experience discusses the meaning of life.  This chapter develops the idea that the meaning of life is self-expression.  It further develops the concept of self introduced in earlier chapters, and defines the concept of self-expression.  The concept of self-expression is very similar to the idea of “being yourself,” an idea that became popular in the 1960s.
