Request for Input on Worldwide Positive Displacement and Turbine Flowmeter Studies

Flow Research has teamed up with Ducker Research of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to produce a series of studies called Worldflow™.  This study is divided into two phases.  Phase One, which includes ultrasonic, vortex, DP, magnetic, and Coriolis flowmeters, is complete.  Phase Two includes turbine, positive displacement, variable area, open channel, and thermal mass flowmeters.

Why these studies?  In recent years, some flowmeter studies have been written that address the market for individual types of meters.  However, these studies make it difficult to assess the impact different types of flowmeters are having on these single technologies.  For example, most people would agree that ultrasonic flowmeters are growing rapidly, but what is the impact of magnetic, vortex, or Coriolis flowmeters on ultrasonic meters?  By studying all these technologies together, we have been able to give each technology uniform treatment, using a consistent set of definitions.

Phase One is complete, and includes six volumes.  Volume VI is a Worldwide Survey of Flowmeter Users that includes users of all flow technologies.  We are now writing Volumes VII and VIII, which are about Positive Displacement and Turbine Flowmeters.  All studies are worldwide in scope.  There will be a separate study on each type of flowmeter.

Your input is extremely important to this study.  We want to know what is most important to you so we can be sure to cover the subjects of concern to you.  Please respond to Flow Research by email (jesse@flowresearch.com), by fax (781-224-7552), or by phone (781-245-3200).  Our regular mail address is Flow Research, 27 Water Street, Wakefield, MA  01880.  Also, if you prefer not to deal with the structure of this form, just send an email or fax with your comments. Please visit our website at www.flowresearch.com for more information.  Thank you! – Jesse Yoder, Research Director, Flow Research.

The following is an outline of the studies.  Both the Positive Displacement and Turbine Flowmeter studies will have a similar structure:

Chapter 1: Executive Summary

Chapter 2: Introduction (Includes Scope, Definitions, and Methodology)

Chapter 3: Flowmeter Product and Technology Analysis

Chapter 4: Flowmeter Market Size and Forecasts through 2006

Chapter 5: Flowmeter Supplier Market Shares

Chapter 6: Strategies for Success

Chapter 7: Company Profiles

Appendix A: Input Questionnaire

Appendix B: End-User Questionnaire

Appendix C: Directory of Flowmeter Suppliers

1.      What are your sources of market research information (check all that apply)?

_____ We don’t use market research

_____ We do our own market research

_____ We get what we need from the Internet

_____ We use custom market research studies from outside companies

_____ We use off-the-shelf studies from outside companies

_____ Other (please specify) ______________________________________

What are your current market research needs (e.g., custom work, off-the-shelf studies)?  Please specify any subject areas that you need market research in, or anticipate future needs.  Please include, but do not limit yourself to, instrumentation topics.

Segmentation

5. One important aspect of the study is the product segmentation.  As of now, we plan to include the following segmentation.  The segmentation for turbine meters is incomplete.

Positive Displacement Flowmeters               Turbine Flowmeters

Liquid vs. Gas                                                  Liquid vs. Gas

Diaphragm                                                        Insertion vs. Inline

Helical Gear                                                     Axial

Nutating Disc                                                    Paddlewheel?

Oscillating Piston                                              Pelton Wheel?

Oval Gear                                                        Woltmann?

Rotary                                                              Tangential?

Please indicate any other product categories you would like to see included for either PD or turbine meters

_________________________________________________________________

6. Do either PD or turbine flowmeters incorporate “smart” technology or self-diagnostics?  Do they incorporate HART, Foundation Fieldbus, or Profibus?  Do you expect this for the future?

7. Please mention any other issues that you would like to see addressed in these studies.
