Dear Product or Marketing Manager,
I hope that you are having a great new year so far! These are exciting times, and much is happening in the temperature industry. With Y2K behind us, more money should become available for basic research. Many changes are in store within the temperature industry, and within the whole area of process control and industrial automation. There is much to anticipate.
As you may know, for most of the past year, Flow Research and Ducker Worldwide have been working on a comprehensive study of the temperature sensor and transmitter market in the Americas. The great news is that this study is complete and that we have already shipped a number of copies. Because I know that many of you have not had a chance to think about ordering this study, due to the holidays, I thought I would send you another update.
After completing this study, several things stand out in my mind:
- The temperature sensor market in the Americas is much larger than I imagined, and in fact is equal to $540 million, not including temperature transmitters.
- While some may feel that temperature is not a fast-growth market, several segments are showing rapid growth that is greater than 11 percent per year. These segments are thin-film RTDs and infrared thermometers.
- Much of the activity in temperature transmitters is directed towards high-tier products, which are showing the fastest growth, while purchases of analog transmitters are declining.
- Market consolidation is an ongoing process, and is likely to accelerate.
I also want to let you know a few important facts about this study:
- In conducting the research for this study, we contacted over 450 companies and did more than 250 supplier interviews. We conducted on-site visits to increase depth of coverage.
- The study contains a wealth of original data, with over 300 charts and tables. Complete market share and market size data is provided for temperature sensors and transmitters in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Market growth is forecast through 2004.
- A complete analysis of the end-user survey is contained in chapter eight. The end-user survey analysis contains more than 100 charts. The end-user survey data confirms the supplier data and also explains user purchasing intentions.
- The end-user survey provides a snapshot of the installed base of temperature sensors and transmitters by type. Most other studies do not even address the issue of installed base.
- Complete market share and market size analysis for temperature sensors and transmitters is provided by industry. The study includes 17 industries.
- We have been able to get a lot of the information you asked for up front, including market size, market shares, growth forecasts, end-user purchasing plans, and much more.
- We have added some additional segmentation to the transmitter side, including rail-mount, headmount, and fieldmount.
- Complete temperature transmitter segmentation includes low-cost, analog, programmable, smart, and high-tier.
- Temperature sensors covered include thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, and infrared thermometers. Thermowells are also included. Both dollar and unit figures are provided.
- Thermocouples are broken down into types K, J, T, E, and Other. RTDs are segmented into wirewound and thin-film. Infrared thermometers are divided into portable and fixed.
- Appendix C contains a list of about 350 temperature companies, with complete contact information. This list includes the products sold by those companies. Any distributors and resellers are identified as such.
One reason this study is so important is that no one has taken a look at the temperature market since 1996. And while other companies may study temperature sensors or temperature transmitters individually, this study looks at both markets together. This is very important because the two markets are closely related. Whenever a temperature transmitter is sold, a temperature sensor is needed to serve as input. And many end-users are becoming more aware of using temperature transmitters instead of using the direct-connect method.
Another unique feature of this study is the product and technology analysis. This chapter explains the technologies of temperature sensors and transmitters and looks at some of the leading products in both categories. It also contains a table of 180 suppliers that tells which temperature products each supplier carries.
If you would like to read the Introduction to the study, which is chapter two, it is available on the Flow Research website at http://www.flowresearch.com/. Simply go to the website and click on "temperature study" to read this chapter. It explains the scope and research methods of the study. If you would like more details about the study, feel free to contact me directly at Flow Research (781-224-7550), or contact Nick Limb at Ducker Worldwide (800-929-0086).
I have enjoyed working with you on this exciting study. Feel free to call me at 781-224-7550 if you have any questions. Or, you can email me at jesse@flowresearch.com. Thanks for your help in putting this study together, and I know that you will be absolutely delighted with this study when you receive it!
Best wishes,
